Escriptor americà, Charles Bukowski va ser un dels autors més influents en la literatura americana del segle XX gràcies al seu estil personal, transgressor i carregat de sentiments en estat pur. Nascut a Alemanya i criat a la ciutat de Los Angeles, Bukowski va estudiar periodisme sense arribar a acabar els seus estudis. Després d’aquesta etapa va començar a escriure mentre viatjava pels Estats Units realitzant tot tipus de treballs. Va ser després de patir un col.lapse a causa d’una úlcera sagnant que va començar a escriure poesia. La major part d’aquesta època (anys 50) va ser descrita per Bukowski en diversos dels seus relats autobiogràfics. Durant la dècada dels 60, Bukowski va treballar com a carter i va començar a publicar els seus escrits en revistes com The Outsider i a col.laborar per a mitjans independents com Open City o Los Angeles Free Press. El 1969 va decidir dedicar-se en exclusiva a l’escriptura gràcies a la confiança mostrada pel seu editor John Martin. La seva primera obra, El Carter, va ser publicada aquest mateix any. A aquesta novel.la seguirien altres tan famoses com Factótum, Hollywood o Pulp, a més de nombroses antologies com La màquina de cardar o Ereccions, ejaculacions, exhibicions, també cal destacar les recopilacions dels seus articles en premsa com El que més m’agrada és gratar-me els aixelles. L’obra de Bukowski va influir tant als Estats Units com a la resta del món i la seva obra va ser traduïda a més de dotze idiomes. La seva vida va inspirar la pel.lícula Ordinària bogeria i també Barfly, el guió va ser escrit pel propi autor. Charles Bukowski va morir a San Pedro el 9 de març de 1994.
